The Kyela Teas Catalogue of Darjeeling Teas

The Kyela Teas Catalogue contains our best teas of the year. We closely follow the Darjeeling growing season opening each year in the Spring as the First Flush teas start to arrive and close as the teas sell out before the following First Flush.

This unconventional sales period ensures fresh leaf is sold in its prime and avoids carrying stock into the next growing year. Teas that are sold at the end the year still have a good six months before they begin to lose their character to age.

The teas in this catalogue are all of premium whole leaf grades and are grown on the high altitude slopes of the District of Darjeeling in the Indian Himalayas.

Gopaldhara DJ-38 FTGFOP1 First Flush 2005

Gopaldhara DJ-41 Oolong First Flush 2005
NEW ARRIVAL From one of Darjeeling's highest sections, over 2500m ASL, this seductive oolong is very similar to the highly-praised WT-13 of 2003. An exceptional semi-oxidized tea with a small, coppery leaf. A very fine combination of the clear floral garden notes we have come to expect from Gopaldhara’s high-grown teas with a rich, sweet, fruity cup. Texture has a pleasant, smooth viscosity, aftertaste full, and overall balance a cut above the rest. "As the DJ-29 is a voluminous whole leaf tea a slightly larger mesure than usual. Darjeeling is very much a black tea region as you know so their "oolongs" are adjusted from the leaf and processing specific to that domain. With this approach in mind explore the effect that a 35% oxidation has on their prize leaf; the world class plant matter softened and enriched by the conversion of a gentle fermentation."K.G.

Samabeong DJ1 FTGFOP1 First Flush 2005
From the highest point of this isolated garden, 2750m ASL and the highest in the Darjeeling District. This invoice is a rare coming together of all the necessary factors, natural and manufactured, for an outstanding First Flush black tea. Perfect balance of a full flavour with a slightly leafy edge and explosive aromatics. Full lingering aftertaste.

Darjeeling Tea

"The District of Darjeeling, high in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, produces the most sophisticated and fragrant black teas that the world has to offer. Collectively the 87 "tea-gardens"in this tiny region create the tea equivalent of an appellation of French wine. The sub-tropical, high altitude conditions are at the very extremity of the tea plant's tolerance. As with other plants that excel when pushed to their limits such as coffee, olives and grapes, hardship increases the chemical compounds reponsible for the leaves' aromatic qualities. For 150 years Darjeeling has held its worldwide reputation as the "champagne of black teas" intently focussed on the very labour-intensive, perfection of taste. At auction the First and Second Flush Darjeeling teas fetch the elevated prices that support the region's industry for the whole year."

Kevin Gascoyne, "Eat" Magazine, Tokyo 2001.
